'Udayananu Tharam' strikes same old chords

The music of "Udayananu Tharam", the much-awaited Mohanlal film scripted by Sreenivasan and directed by debutant Roshan Andrews, is just about average.
Composed by Deepak Dev, who made a fantastic debut with Siddique's "Chronic Bachelor" a couple of years ago, does not recreate the same magic this time around.
Maybe the unconventional theme dealing with the behind-the-scene activities of tinsel town made the composer feel stifled. So you get a feeling that you have heard this music somewhere before. All the songs you hear have a typical blockbuster quality to them: the excessive use of artificial sounds and the chorus, which runs throughout like a thread.
"Parayathe Ariyathe", a soft song rendered by K.J. Yesudas and K.S. Chitra, is the best of the pick. It is a song of lovers nostalgically looking back at their separation. A solo rendition by Karthik of the song is given on Side B.
"Karale Karalinte" will surely take you into a retro mood: it is a boy wooing a girl. The song by Vineeth Sreenivasan and Remi Tomy has a 60s-70s feel to it.
Afsal, who has carved out a niche for himself as a singer of "Adi Poli" songs - fast-paced dance numbers in the local parlance - is joined by Shalini Singh to sing "Penne En Penne". This is a typical Afsal song that is sure to top the charts in the coming weeks. And the remix version with rap-style English lyrics added on at the end of the album is surely a heady mix.
The theme music successfully brings out the gloss and the fake-ness of the film world to the fore.
There are two songs from the private collection of the Audio Company to fill in the space in the cassette. Both the songs are penned by Rajeev Alunkal and composed by Sanjeev Lal. It seems that these songs have been put there to showcase the team's versatility.
"Kallayipuzha" is a folksy tune rendered soulfully by Vineeth Sreenivasan. "Chankeduthu Kattiyal", based on beats and belted out by Anwar, is surely inspired by Tamil chartbusters.
