Mammootty's fan club to help conduct eye camps

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 20 (IANS) Malayalam superstar Mammootty has agreed to his fans association using his name to help a leading eye hospital conduct eye-camps in the state.

"My fans association is called the Mammootty Fans and Welfare Association and this new venture is one of the many welfare activities undertaken by them," the actor told IANS.

The association will join hands with the Little Flower Hospital in Angamaly, near Kochi, to organise eye camps across Kerala and will provide free treatment to the needy.

"I strongly feel that a fans association is not just meant to sit and whistle in theatres when a film is released. In my case, they are into welfare activities because I know that whistling alone will not get the audience to watch a film," said Mammootty.

The Little Flower Hospital is one of the premier eye hospitals in the state and the new venture with Mammootty has landed a grant of Rs.10 million from a United Nations body.

However, Mammootty will only be lending his name to the project and will not be contributing any money to it.

"I have been asked not to contribute any funds. Let me see the response the programme gets and if needed I might join it personally," said Mammootty.

The actor is now eagerly waiting the release of his latest film "Barghavacharitham Moonnam Ghantam" which he terms as the first "black comedy" in Malayalam films.
