Sundance fest becoming 'polluted lagoon': Swinton

London, April 9 (IANS) Oscar winning actress Tilda Swinton was amazed by the amount of free stuff that was offered at the Sundance film festival this year.

She said the event, which was held in Utah in January, was becoming like "a polluted lagoon". The actress, who won the best supporting Oscar for "Michael Clayton", was there to promote her new movie "Derek", which she has written and produced. She was shunned when she told organisers she didn't want anything to do with the free stuff, contactmusic.com reports.

She said: "Everybody went there to enjoy the crystal waters and the white sand, and they just messed it up with swag bags and studio deals. I actually said I didn't want any swag, and it was not kindly taken. Someone almost said to me, 'Well, what are you doing here then?'"

Veteran actor-director Robert Redford started the festival to provide a platform for upcoming filmmakers working outside the Hollywood mainstream cinema. The festival over the years is instead earning more criticism for becoming increasingly commercial.
