Kaka - a 16 year old Adivasi girl belonging to the Naik tribe; as innocent as she is beautiful; possessively fond of her younger brother Ramu. Her grandfather and great grandfather were staunch believers in the Gandhi - Nehru philosophy, and the children were taught to cherish those values. But the modern-day followers of those great leaders have left their philosophy aside. In the struggle for political power and wealth there is no room for ideologies. Kaka becomes the unwitting victim of this political one-upmanship, and gets arrested, though she does not know what for. The very political party that her forefathers supported betrays them.
Meghavarsham, directed by Madhu Parthasarathy, is a film that tells the story of the exploitation of Adivasi tribals by unscrupulous politicians. Madhu, who was born and brought up in Erumad village bordering the Nilgiri district, has a long association with the tribals, and knows his subject well. The film has references to the Muthanga incident in which several tribals lost their lives. But the film is not about the tribal leader CK Janu, says Madhu.
Meghavarsham is the first directorial venture of Madhu Parthasarathy, a serious film maker whose early role model was John Abraham. Arathy Nambiar, a student of Providence College, Calicut, plays the lead role of Kaka. Praveen Panicker, who did the camera work for Oraal, handles cinematography for the film, most of which is shot in interior Manantawadi.
