GST will be implemented across the country from today, the 1st July and the government has put the entertainment industry in a 28% tax slab. This has not gone well with the industry who have given their please to the government to bring down the rate.
Now, suddenly, the Tamil Nadu state government had announced that it would levy an additional 30% tax in the form of Municipal tax totaling to 58% tax on the entertainment business. This means that a ticket that is costing Rs 120 now, would very easily go up to 178/-.
Therefore, to protest against this ruling, the theatre owners have decided to shut shop and all over Tamil Nadu theatres would remain closed from Monday. It is also said that there would not be any online booking today also. Various associations are meeting today to bring a solution to this problem.
