Why 'Vengayam' has been re-released
Mar 27, 2012 PGVThe film was released on March 24, 2012 and it received positive reviews. The story is unconventional. It 'confronts' so-called astrologers and god men out to take people for a ride. Veteran Sathyaraj, who shares the ideals of social reformer and rationalist leader EVR Periyar, (who used the word Vengayam repeatedly in his public speeches) appears in a few scenes and for a song penned by Suba Veerapandian. Alexander and Pavina play the lead roles. Nithya scores the music. Manickam SM produced the film.
Director/actor Cheran has now re-released the film with the intention of carrying its message to the masses. He cites 'Annakkili', 'Oru Thalai Ragam' and 'Chithiram Pesuthadi' and says they had not received the response they ought to when first released. When the same films were re-released, their import was realized and appreciated. The viewers celebrated. Those films in fact became trendsetters in Tamil cinema.
Cheran had watched 'Vengayam' after he heard about it. Debutant director Sankagiri Rachkumar had given a superb movie. He had boldly conveyed what society needed to know. There was also a message for the younger generation, Cheran says.
He has decided re-release it films like this should reach a wider audience and the director should get due recognition. It is now running in more than 52 theatres all over Tamil Nadu excepting Madurai. This time the film has been well received. Some directors were highly impressed after seeing the movie and they have sent him the video recordings of their comments. Describing their exhilarating views as 'a tonic' Cheran says these directors would be part of the success.
