Jul 31, 2012 PGV

It is famous music composer Vijay Antony who helped launch cinematographer Jeeva Shankar as a director, has high stakes in the soon-to-be released ‘Naan’. He has funded the film and also played a challenging role (protagonist) for the first time. This is a bold step for an established and popular name in film music.

“It is hard earned money that Vijay has pumped into the project and both of us realize the stakes involved. Yet, if he (Vijay) has taken the plunge it is only because of his faith in the story, script, music and himself, and in the audience who don’t let a good film down,” Sankar says.

Sankar recounts that Vijay asked him to narrate the story he had in mind. When Sankar was looking for a producer, Aascar Ravichandran offered to produce it, but matters did not work out. Then Vijay took the plunge and told Sankar “Let us go ahead Sankar. I will launch you as a director and myself as an actor.”

Sankar had trained for seven years under cinematogapher-cum-director Jeeva who died a few years ago. He handled the camera for ‘Unnaalae Unnaalae. Later he became the director of photography for ‘Anana Thaandavam” starring Siddhar-Tamannah.. For ‘Naan’ he doubles up as cameraman and director.

Besides showcasing his acting talent “which will surprise filmgoers”, Vijay Antony can be seen performing a couple of his numbers on screen. According to Sankar, Antony’s amazing re-recording will be a talking point of ‘Naan’.

Most of the songs have been shot as montages. In the words of Sankar it is a very different film; it is true-to –life; a thriller with a dash of sentiment. The philosophy that a man is upright only till he finds an opportunity to be otherwise is expounded in ‘Naan’.

Apart from Vijay Antony, the cast includes Siddharth, Rupa Manjari, Anuya and debutant Viba. Another new face is Vijay Victor, a model and “Mr. Chennai” titleholder.

The film was canned in 66 days after the actors had undergone rehearsals for two months. Click the Movie button below for more info:
