'Sivaji' release in record number of theatres
Jun 4, 2007 PVSThis number is unprecedented in the history of Tamil cinema. Directed by Shankar, the film featuring Shreya opposite Rajinikanth is set for release on June 15. "Sivaji" will be releasing in as many as 16 theatres in Chennai itself. They include Abirami Complex (three screens); Sathyam Cinema (two screens); with five shows every day Mayajaal will be showing the film in five screens.
According to Abirami Ramanathan, who has bought the Chennai distribution rights, talks are under way with INOX and other theatres in Chennai.
The film is releasing in a record number of theatres because the cost of production of the film has run into several crores and the producers' strategic move will enable them to recover the cost as quickly as possible, it is said.
Rajinikanth's earlier hit "Chandramukhi" had more than 160 prints. Normally 130 to 140 prints are made for a film starring a top star.
The buzz is that the new Kalaignar TV Channel which is yet to be launched has bought the satellite rights of "Sivaji" which will be telecast three years after its release. This channel has also already bought nearly 25 new films, including "Mozhi", "Guru", and "Ayudha Ezhuthu".
