Jul 2, 2012 PGV

Actor Sham seems serious in his efforts to prove that he is more than a chocolate boy. He stars in a film titled ‘6 Candles' in which appears in three get-ups. The title symbolises six candles. The story takes place over a period of six years, six months, six days and six hours. The film has been shot in six places _ Goa, Mumbai, Kolkata, Kanpur, Lucknow and Allahabad.

A minor problem confronts when the hero was a young boy. When he finishes his college and steps into life, the problem grows bigger and mysterious. Either he has to solve it or face death. With these two options, the hero goes chasing the problem all over the country and the problem also tails him along. Whether the hero succeeds or the problem annilates him is the story.

The film traces three phases in the hero’s life. For the first 20 minutes Sham is Sham _a chocolate hero reveling in love and romance. In the next phase, he plays a matured character. In the climax his looks change beyond recognition. He needed to look weak and shed 17 kilos, grow beard and long matted hair. Director Durai wanted his character to be different from what others have done so far.

Sham recalls that way back in 2006, he was working throughout the day without a wink of sleep. As a result the tissues under his eyes swelled. He thought he could use that condition for this film. He did not sleep for ten whole days. As expected he developed swelling around his eyes. When he looked terrible with his eyes swollen and closed on the day he was to shoot for the climax. The director and the cameraman were stunned seeing Sham in that condition.

On the shooting spot, everyone from lightmen touched his eyes to test whether it was real or a make-up. Sham shot for 20 days for the climax and then went for medial treatment. Sham says his friend, Kannada hero Sudeep scolded him and doctors also warned him against taking such a risk.

Archana and Poonam are the female leads. Archana dominates for the first 30 minutes. Poonam plays a pivotal role which gives her much scope for acting. The film’s ‘turning’ is in her hands, says Sham.
