Mixed response to Bill 2, fresh bid to prop it up

Jul 16, 2012 PGV

It is three days since Ajith’s Billa 2 was released with fanfare after a couple of postponement which only hiked the audience's expectations. It was thought it would be unlike the Ajith flicks in the past. But those who sat through the film on the first three days were said to have been visibly annoyed. A section of the Ajit fans is crestfallen. One hears no more talk of David Billa hitting a new high. The euphoria is dying down. Director Chakri Toleti must be wringing his hands and the makers must be thinking what went wrong and where. Billa 2 is an attempt at setting a new “bench mark”. Producer Sunir Kheterpal of In Entertainment does not sound as reassuring as before. "The next five days will tell us where the film is eventually headed," is his rueful comment.

He says the team is working on a few promotional strategies. “Behind – the-scenes footage will be released this week. We are also planning to add the ‘Idhayam…’

song to the film in the second week.”

Statements from producers Suresh Balaje and Kheterpal and distributor Aascar Ravichandran appear to be a laboured exercise to keep up the morale. Balaje claims they have received ‘fantastic reports from all quarters about the BO collection of the film, while Kheterpal consoles himself saying the film is “likely” to garner Rs. 38 crore to Rs.40 crore in the first three days.. A report quoted Ravichandran as saying, “As a distributor, I am happy with the response. The opening day collection is bigger than Ajith’s previous film.”

From the audience’s point of view, Billa 2 is bald. It does not even have comedy which is an essential ingredient in today’s cinema. And there are no gana or ‘kuthu’ songs either. Ajith is drowned in action, action and more action. The film is really action-packed with nothing else to prop it up and sustain the audience interest, a film buff lamented.
