During his visit to Chennai last month, Bollywood producer Bharat Shah clinched the deal with director Mani Ratnam. 'Thalapathi' is only the second film after 'Alaipayuthey' for which the ace director has sold off the remake rights.
Bharat Shah and Mani Ratnam, who are known to share a very good personal and professional rapport, had co-produced 'Saathiya' with Yash Chopra. Sources are quoted as saying that Bharat Shah was keen to buy the remake rights of 'Thalapathi' as it has all the pre-requisites for an entertaining Hindi film.
Puja Jatinder Bedi will direct the Hindi remake. He has directed 'Ghost' which is ready for release. He has also worked for films like 'Mangal Pandey', 'The Myth' and 'Saathiya'.
'Thalapathi' was made in 1991 and so Puja plans to revise parts of the story as well as a few action sequences, keeping the screenplay and the characters unchanged.
Bharat Shah, confirming the deal with Mani Ratnam, said the project would take off after the release of 'Ghost'.
