A chat with Mandhira Punnagai heroine

Nov 18, 2010 Mythily Ramachandran

A native of Kolkata, Meenakshi entered Kollywood with 'Karuppusamy Kuththagaithaarar,' making a mark. The pretty actress is playing an important role in Karu Palaniappan's 'Mandhira Punnagai,' that will be hitting the screens on November 19th. Meenakshi talks to Mythily Ramachandran about her role and foray into films.

Tell us about your character in Mandhira Punnagai?

I play Nandhini, who is so perfect. I'd love to be like her. She is so forgiving, bubbly and at the same time level headed.

What were the challenges of the role?

This was more challenging than my earlier films, because in my earlier films, there were less dialogues and I had to concentrate more on expression. This film, being a heroine oriented one; I am visible in all the frames. There are a lot of dialogues; hence speaking in a new language was quite a task. Besides, we put in longer days of work.

How was it working with Karu Palaniappan?

The director plays the hero too in the film. He guided me well. He was very strict with the dialogues. Since this is a performance oriented film, he was particular about my pronunciation. It was a great learning experience.

How is it working in the Tamil industry?

Pretty good. I am enjoying my work although it has been hectic.

How did films happen?

It was never planned. My first modeling happened when I was in class 8. A leading choreographer who lives in my neighbourhood insisted that I participate in her show. I was very reluctant and not sure of myself. But she would not listen. I have done ramp shows too. I came down for my first film after I appeared for my plus two examinations. This is my sixth film.

Any Bollywood plans?

Yes, of course, that is why I have moved to Mumbai. I don't want to take on mediocre roles. I had rather wait for the right one.

How did your family react to your joining films?

My father is a businessman and my mother a homemaker. I am their only child. They did not like my entering films, more so after I graduated with honours in Mathematics from St. Xaviers College, Kolkata last year.
