'Monalisa' crosses 100-day mark - Kannada Box office
Aug 19, 2004 IANS Aug 19The following are the top five Kannada films of the week:
1. "Monalisa": The film completed 100 days this week. Made on a budget of around Rs.12.5 million, the film has grossed over Rs. 25 million in major centres and may do another Rs.10-million business in interiors. A feather in the cap for director Indrajith Lankesh and a big boost for lead pair Dhyan and Sada.
2. "Baa Baaro Rasika": This Ramya Krishnan-starrer has become an unexpected hit and has been picking up audience support even after completing 50 days in many centres. Industry sources say that the song picturisations and the sex element have helped the film at the box office. The film has promoted director Dayal and hero Sunil, who has now signed a few big films.
3. "Bhagawan": Though not appreciated critically, this Darshan starrer has got a good opening in theatres. The flaws in the film have not deterred ardent Darshan fans from seeing it again and again as their favourite hero has a tailor-made role for him. Anjali and Bhavana, in skimpy costumes, are the frontbenchers' delight. The film, however, may not have a sustained run.
4. "Excuse Me": The film is continuing to reap dividends in major cities, where it is now being released in some suburban theatres. The youthful entertainer has music as its strong point. A simple story, well told, it has been much appreciated by the younger audience. Director Prem's stock has risen. Leading lady Ramya and Sunil, who has acted in a role with negative shades, have benefited immensely benefited from the film's success.
5. "Kanti": The backdrop of the film - the friction between the pro-Karnataka and pro-Marathi activists in Belgaum - has created considerable audience interest. Added to that was the fact that the film was stalled by the censors for some time and was only cleared after a revised version was presented. Murali and Ramya, the hero and heroine of the younger brigade, look good. One song of the film, "Baanalli Baa Chandira', has become popular. But the film may not have a long run.
