'Jogi' fever rages across Karnataka

Sep 8, 2005 R.G. Vijayasarathy, Sep 8

Bangalore, Sep 8 (IANS) "Jogi", released three weeks ago, is drawing unprecedented crowds, with theatres selling out days in advance.

"Deadly Soma", released a week later, has also had a decent opening.

The top five Kannada films:

1. "Jogi": The "Jogi" wave is sweeping across Karnataka. In two weeks, the film's collections have exceeded Rs.20 million in the Bangalore-Kolar-Tumkur area. It looks as if the film will not be replaced from its top place for another 8 to 10 weeks.

2. "Akash": The film has been attracting crowds even after completing 125 days. It may be heading for a silver jubilee in a couple of theatres. The collections have been good in B and C centres too. The continuous rains have affected the collections somewhat. The film's success has indirectly helped the pre-release hype and marketing of Puneet Raj Kumar's "Namma Basava" that will hit the screens Friday.

3. "Deadly Soma": The film's initial collections and subsequent improvement have really come as a surprise to trade analysts. The film was released just a week after "Jogi". Every analyst thought "Deadly Soma" would be crushed under the "Jogi" impact. Audithya, the hero of "Deadly Soma", has two flops behind him, but has now become the backbone of his third film in which he plays the title role.

4. "Gauramma": This Upendra-Ramya-starrer is set to complete 100 days. The film will make profits for the producer and distributor in all territories.

5. "Mental Manja": With a newcomer as the hero and a new director, the film has done well at the box office and recovered its investment in it in just three weeks. The film is a hit, particularly in Bangalore.
