Boyle to make a dark thriller on Mumbai
Jan 21, 2009 IANS"I'd love to make a dark thriller on Mumbai. Mumbai is like New York, which can produce extraordinary thrillers. It's got balance, landscape though not obviously so much architecture. So it'll make a great thriller," Boyle said in a press meet here Wednesday.
"But I have to admit that no filmmaker can ever capture Mumbai. You can hope to capture bits of it, but not the entire city and that's what we tried to do in 'Slumdog Millionaire'," he added.
Set in Mumbai, the film is about a slum boy who wins a TV quiz show. The director said that the often beleaguered financial capital of India is his film's real hero.
"Apart from the stars we have in the movie, the real star for me is Mumbai. I am a British filmmaker and our tradition is realism. We root things in realism and 'Slumdog Millionaire' is a combination of fairy tales and realism," said the director, who was here the with main cast of the movie.
Starring debutante Dev Patel, Frieda Pinto, Anil Kapoor and Irrfan Khan, the film has won four Golden Globe awards and 11 BAFTA nominations.
Releasing Jan 23 in India, "Slumdog Millionaire" has already raked in $43 million at the US box office to jump into the US Top 10.
On being asked if he was confident of winning an Oscar nomination to be announced Thursday, Boyle said: "We are keeping our fingers crossed but even if we drop off the theatrical cliff (Oscar nominations), that's fine with us because we have come way beyond we could ever imagine. We have learnt a lot ourselves too while making the film."
