'Slumdog' people's favourite for Oscar
Feb 22, 2009 IANSAccording to a poll carried out for HMV's film and music social networking site getcloser.com, "Slumdog Millionaire" would win the prize if the victor was decided by the public.
An overwhelming 59 percent of voters named "Slumdog Millionaire" as their favourite to win Best Picture, with "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" a distant second with 22 percent votes, contactmusic.com reports.
The results were similar in the Best Director category of the getcloser poll, with 59 percent of voters naming Danny Boyle as their choice for Oscar glory.
The rags-to-riches story has received a total of 10 Oscar nominations, including three for Indian music maestro A.R. Rahman and one for Resul Pookutty for sound mixing.
In the acting categories, people picked Mickey Rourke and Kate Winslet for the top prizes, and Taraji P. Henson and the late Heath Ledger for the supporting awards.
"This poll of film fans suggests that 'Slumdog Millionaire' has a great chance of building on its BAFTA success by also prevailing in the key best picture and directing Oscar categories - although it's likely to face a much stronger challenge from 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' this time around," said Matt Potter, content manager for the networking site.
