Sibling power rocks Bollywood
Aug 10, 2011 Radhika BhiraniWhile Ekta produced the critically acclaimed dark comedy "Shor In The City", which narrates three interconnected stories amid the noise and grime of Mumbai, Tusshar's work in the movie was appreciated too.
The young actor, who stuck mostly to comedy films initially, got a chance to put his versatility on display thanks to his sister, who is known to have given a platform to talents like Rajeev Khandelwal and Prachi Desai in the television and Hindi film industry.
Zoya and Farhan, children of veteran writer-lyricist Javed Akhtar, have emerged to be two writer-filmmakers in sync with youth's choice. But Zoya's skills of using her brother's acting skills have won her praise too.
For her directorial debut "Luck By Chance", Zoya roped in Farhan. The movie scored an average, but their latest outing, "Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara", has scored a six. Farhan's character has been adored by viewers and the siblings received a positive response for their work.
There are other brother-sister duos in the industry too - Farah-Sajid Khan, Saif Ali-Khan-Soha Ali Khan, Amisha-Ashmit Patel, and Esha Deol-Sunny Deol-Bobby Deol.
Choreographer-turned-filmmaker Farah, and her actor-filmmaker brother have churned out quite a few winners together in the past - "Housefull", "Main Hoon Na", "Om Shanti Om" and "Heyy Babyy". Farah has also choreographed a song for Sajid's "Housefull 2".
Veteran star Sharmila Tagore's children, Saif and Soha, are yet to share the Bollywood screen together, but they have built a name for themselves individually over the years.
Saif, who made his debut in the film industry in 1992, is now a successful producer too. His upcoming films include Prakash Jha's "Aarakshan", in which he will be seen as a school teacherm. Later, his high-on-action home production "Agent Vinod" will be up for grabs.
His little sister Soha isn't counted among the A-list actresses, but her work in films like "Rang De Basanti", "Khoya Khoya Chand" and "Tum Mile", was noticed. Soha's choice of films is less commercial and more experimental.
The case is similar with the Deol brothers and sister! Esha, Sunny and Bobby haven't shared the same frame - but they have enjoyed their own Bollywood innings. Now, as Esha is set to get relaunched in her mother's directorial "Tell Me O Khuda", the Deol brothers, along with their father, veteran actor Dharmendra, displayed full support for her through a performance at the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards in Toronto in June.
Ameesha and Ashmit Patel are another example, but both failed to make a long-term mark in Bollywood. Ameesha got a dream debut in Rakesh Roshan's 2000 blockbuster "Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai", and followed up the success with her intense performance in "Gadar - Ek Prem Katha" in 2001 as well as in "Humraaz" in 2003. But none of her other films managed to impress.
Her brother Ashmit was seen in films like "Inteha", "Murder" and "Nazar", but he came more in the limelight when he was named in an MMS scandal. Last year Ashmit bounced back to showbiz with his participation in reality show "Bigg Boss". After that, he has been in the news off and on and is currently hosting a TV show "Superstud" on UTV Bindass.
Shabana Azmi and her brother Baba Azmi have made their contributions in the Hindi film industry. While Shabana has displayed her impeccable acting capacity in 37 years of her film career, Baba has shot for films like "Arjun", "Beta", "Tezaab", "Mr.India", "Akele Hum Akele Tum" and "Pukar".
There are also the legendary Mangeshkars - composer Hridaynath and his singer sisters - Lata, Asha, Usha and Meena.
