Munnabhai's 'Gandhigiri': Congress' student wing protests
Sep 17, 2006 IANSDescribing the term as disrespectful towards the Father of the Nation, the activists of the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) Saturday staged a protest demonstration in the Madhya Pradesh town of Indore.
They demanded the deletion of the word from the Sanjay Dutt-starrer hit and threatened to disrupt the shows if their demand was not met.
The protesters tore the film's posters at the Collectorate crossing and burnt an effigy of its producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra.
"We will not allow the screening of the film if the word 'gandhigiri', which was disrespectful to Mahatma Gandhi, was not deleted from the film in a week's time," said NSUI state secretary Deepak Chabra who led the demonstration.
When told that the Congress party had appreciated the film that was also exempted from entertainment tax in the Congress-ruled Delhi, Chabra told IANS: "I am least bothered".
Madhya Pradesh Congress spokesman K.K. Mishra said he was not aware of the protests but added that he would look into the matter and the party would seek an explanation from the NSUI leaders if they had held protests.
