Let the audience decide on 'Namastey London': Vipul Shah

Mar 26, 2007 Subhash K. Jha

Mumbai, March 26 (IANS) Vipul Shah's just-released "Namastey London", starring Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif, is being compared with Manoj Kumar's 1971 hit film "Purab Aur Paschim" and Mani Ratnam's "Mouna Ragam" (1986) and its lack of originality pointed out.

But the director laughs it off saying: "Everyone has his own take on where 'Namastey London' is inspired from. Some think it's Manoj Kumar's 'Purab Aur Paschim'. Others think it's Mani Rathnam's 'Mouna Ragam'. Let the audience decide what it is."

He says that contrary to general conception, it's not another hackneyed love story.

"People seem to think, it's just another love story. But within the given framework I've done something quite different from the expected," Shah told IANS.

As for the story about Upen Patel getting a raw deal vis-à-vis Akshay, Shah says: "I'm giving Upen a chance to explain to me where all this talk is coming from. I'll give my side of the story. For now I'd like to say Upen doesn't figure in the promos because during scripting he didn't fit into any of the songs.

"Everyone including Upen had a copy of the script. The entire English crew had a script. They don't work without a script. Upen should have shown patience."
