Samastha Keralam.P.O Malayalam Movie
Samastha Keralam PO gets off to a soaring start, and then finds its wings clipped all on a sudden. The flight back to earth isn't all pleasant, as the film frantically kicks about in mid-air for a while and then resignedly gives up.
Jayaram is Prabhakaran in Bipin Prabhakar's film, a man who holds fast to his Gandhian scruples in an age of moral erosion. Contrastingly at the other end of the line stands the Panchayat President Avarachan (Jagathy Sreekumar) who exults in being corruption incarnate. It's primarily a tussle between virtue and vice, that goes on till the former emerges the victor and peace prevails.
I can already sense your eye brows twitching up in hesitation, and I wouldn't really blame you. You got it right, this is a reheated formula all right, no two questions about it. Which is why time and again, as you watch the film, there is a simplistic question that keeps on bobbing up and down your throat - Well yes,….and??
There's plenty of fun after the intermission, most of which arises from the divergent ways in which the tale tellers cook up all imaginable possibilities to keep that story moving forward. There is the routine crook who arrives from Mumbai, the several setbacks that the protagonist comes to face with before the final retribution and of course that reluctant romance that finally emerges from behind the bushes.
I wouldn't brand this film as a torturous one that puts you in sheer agony. This is the kind of film that you would watch with an amazing indifference that you never knew existed within you, your head resting comfortably back on your seat, legs stretched as far as they can possibly be and your eyes half closed. And when it's all over, you walk out like a zombie that has misplaced its car keys.
I'm not very sure if Gireesh wanted this one to be a comedy or a satire or a pure drama. The end product is a mixed bag in general, and the funny spots are few, the sardonic snubs fewer and the dramatic elements minimal.
With the release almost coinciding with the election fever that's rocking the state, Samastha Keralam PO should hope to cash in on the initial curiosity that it has managed to generate. However, it's as non-political as a film can be. It preserves a generalized tone through out and has no intentions of taking up any risks whatsoever.
There's nothing much to be proclaimed about Jayaram , though Priyanka in a microscopic role that offers her literally nothing, excels. There are at least a couple of moments in the film that truly belong to her, and are memorable purely on account of her feat.
Samastha Keralam PO is unlikely to appeal to its target audience, whoever that may be. There's more than enough wrong with it, and it's difficult not to be displeased.
