Sultan Malayalam Movie
One wonders why films like Sultan are made. The film with Vinu Mohan in the lead has nothing to offer and is not worth your time or your money. The director has done a good job. The technicians have rendered able support. And the actors are not totally insufferable. But the whole thing is built on a storyboard that's wafer thin.
Sivaram and his lover Nishitha are students of a medical college. The relationship has received parental approval, and their marriage is fixed. In the midst of their studies, they romance around (and quarrel a lot too). Then one day four friends of Sivaram arrive - Vivek, Sujit, Sunny and Noufal. They study in an engineering college and have been Sivan's closest friends since school days.
The gang of five used to be known as 'Five Men's Gang' and Sivan used to be known as 'Sultan' since he was popular with the girls. The five friends re-live the happiness of the past and make merry. But things go awry when Sivaram is arrested by the police for murder. From here the story takes a new turn.
Vinu Mohan tries hard to make the best of his role as Sivaram, but falters on account of poor scripting. Varadha is good as Nishitha. Sreejith Ravi as Vivek and Anoop Chandran as Noufal are also good. Laloo Aalex and Shari as Nishitha's parents form a good pair. Shammi Thilakan does well. Salim Kumar and Jagathy Sreekumar are their usual selves. Cinematography by P. Sukumar could be called the highlight of the film. The songs however, are just average.
It's the lack of a good and convincing storyline that bogs 'Sultan' down. The plot development is clichéd. The narrative is unimpressive. It's high time our filmmakers turned to fresher subjects and more innovative of treatment.
