Saawariya is an adaptation of Fyodor Dostoevsky's small play "White Nights". Under the direction of Sanjay Leela Bhansali the movie stars debutant star kids Ranbir Kapoor (son of Rishi and Neetu Kapoor) and Sonam Kapoor (daughter of Anil Kapoor). Sanjay's excellence in direction is clearly visible in his previous movies like 'Black', 'Devdas' and 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam'. But has he powered the same amount of excellence in 'Saawariya'? Will the star kids live up to the family legacy and expectations of viewers?

Gulabji (Rani Mukherjee), a prostitute starts the narration of Saawariya. Raj (Ranbir Kapoor) is a young lad who is the lead singer of RK club. He is an orphan but wherever he goes he wins the heart of people and fills the air with happiness. One night as he was loitering by the poolside he comes across a beautiful young lady named Sakina (Sonam Kapoor). He falls madly in love with her on first sight and over four nights of friendship tries to win her heart. But Sakina loves Imaan (Salman Khan) who has left her back home with a promise to return back in a year's time on the day of Id and take her away. The rest of the story tells us if Sakina will unite with her long awaited love or agree to Raj's proposal? Will Raj succeed in winning Sakeena's heart?

Sanjay Leela Bhansali is a perfectionist and has always made excellent movies. But this time around with Saawariya he disappoints. Most of his previous movies might not have fared well at the box-office but they have always won critical acclaim for substance and quality. Akin to his other movies, Saawariya too has a grandeur gigantic sets but he fails to convey the story captivatingly. From the beginning to the end the pace of the movie is too slow and the dim blue and green light effect all through makes it visually tedious. The storyline suits a stage play and not a Bollywood movie. The story may be flawed but Sanjay succeeds to some extent in making you feel for the characters, especially Raj for having lost his love. The excellent performances by the lead actors come as a credit to this movie. The melodious tune of some of the songs like Masha Allah and Yoon Shabnami from the movie is something that you are sure to take back with you.

As I mentioned earlier, performances by its lead actors is the plus point of this movie.

Ranbir Kapoor is brilliant. He has carried his act exceedingly well and emerges a true winner. This young lad has the talent in him that is sure to take him to greater heights and take the proud Kapoor legacy forward. Undoubtedly you'll get to see more of him in the coming years.

Sonam Kapoor is equally competent. She has excellent screen presence. She needs to work a bit on her emotions; with a bit of luck, which is so very important, she will succeed.

Rani Mukherjee as the prostitute is superb. Salman in a 10-minute role is good. Zohra is brilliant.

Overall Saawariya is a tale not too captivating. Sanjay Leela Bhansali disappoints!

Watch it for the star kids.
