Nagathihalli Chandrasekhar has been an enigma to the Kannada film industry. He has always made films with different type of stories written by him and has proved his mettle by drawing big success at the Box office. Though his films do not confirm to the stereotyped commercial films, they have been able to attract a large number of audience to the theatres. He had many silver jubilee hits to his credit. With this background it was obvious that his recent film Maathaad Maathaadu Mallige with Kannada film industry's top artists Dr. Vishnuvardhan, Sudeep and Suhasini in the lead roles became a hot product for the fans and also in the industry. But this well hyped film stands up to the expectations and is truly a wonderful film with great performances and a high quality technical support. And Nagathihalli rocks as a writer also.
Maathaad Maathaadu Mallige produced by K.Manju is a film made in a mainstream format but takes up a very lively and hotly discussed issue as a central point of the story. It sends a strong message against unhindered support to globalization and economic reforms without a human face. In real life too, Nagathihalli has played the crusader's role by personally participating in such struggles. In this film he has used all his resources in writing and direction to spread a message in favor of the lobby fighting against globalization.
Nagathihalli has selected a contemporary subject of land acquisition and displacement of people in the giant projects. And he has selected good locations to shoot this issue based film. In Karnataka the illegal mining activities in Bellary district is making headlines today and the film is certain to raise ripples in the state.
Maathaad Maathaadu Mallige is the story of a crusade of a one man who takes on the multinational and politician nexus even after he is being deserted by others. An influential multinational company uses all designs to take mining license in an area encompassing ten villages and a river. A corrupt minister and the local MLA with a village side kick try to convince the farmers, but Hoovaiah presents a different point of view to farmers. Hoovaiah is a learned progressive farmer who grows jasmine in his land bares the designs of the multinationals and the greedy politicians. But meanwhile he faces many problems in his fight against the giants. His two daughters ditch him for greener pastures and greed. . And his opponents use all sorts of methods to allure the innocent villagers. Meanwhile, a small group of Naxalites will camp in the area to fight against the multinational designs. Hoovaiah loses his wife when the police violence and brutality kills and injures the resisting villagers. His third daughter deserts him to take up arms in the company of Naxalites. Hoovaiah decides to fight in his own way and follows Gandhian path to emerge victorious in the battle. And he also says the Naxalite leader that Socialistic life can not be brought about by violent revolution and essence of Gandhi's teachings are still relevant.
Dr. Vishnuvardhan plays one of his best roles in recent times. As Hoovaiah he is superb and just lives the role. His fans will immensely like the performance. And Suhasini Manirathnam is outstanding in her role. Sudeep comes in the final reels of the second half, but he has done a fantastic job. All the other artists have adequately filled the bill.
Technically also MMM is wonderful. Be it Krishna Kumar's camera work or Mano Murthy's music it is top class. . Editing work of Basavaraj Urs is a plus point to the film. And Art director Arun Sagar has done a fantastic job as an actor too. Take the first opportunity to see this film.
