Adieu Innocent!

Actor Innocent, who had been undergoing treatment for breathing-related problems, passed away at a hospital in Kochi on Sunday night. The actor was 75.

Making his debut as an actor in 1972 in the film ‘Nrithasala’, the gifted actor, who also made an everlasting impression on the hearts of movie buffs as a comedian, went on to act in more than 700 films.

Innocent’s characters in films like ‘Godfather’, ‘Kilukkam’, ‘Manichithrathaazhu,’ ‘Ramji Rao Speaking,’ ‘Mannar Mathai Speaking,’ ‘Sandesham,’ ‘Ponmuttayidunna Tharaavu,’ ‘Mazhavilkkavadi,’ ‘Maalayogam,’ ‘Patham Nilayile Theevandi,’ ‘Gajakesariyogam,’ ‘Keli,’ ‘Chilambu,’ ‘Nadodikkaattu,’ ‘Dr Pasupathy,’ ‘Devasuram,’ ‘Ravanaprabhu’ and ‘Mimics Parade’ etc. are immortal due to his inimitable style in performance. The actor’s best performances were in the films of directors Sathyan Anthikkad, Mohan and Priyadarshan.

He was also seen in Hindi film ‘Malamal Weekly,’ Kannada film ‘Sikkari’ and Tamil film ‘Lesa Lesa.’ Innocent has penned a few books that narrated his experiences as a cancer patient and as an actor in films.

Innocent won the State Best Second Actor Award for ‘Mazhavikkavadi’ in 1989. He has produced films like ‘Ormakkayi,’ ‘Vida Parayum Munpe,’ ‘Oru Kadha Oru Nunakadha’ and ‘Ilakkangal’. Innocent’s another heart-warming performance was in the 2009 film ‘Patham Nilayile Theevandi,’ which fetched him Film Critics Award.

Innocent was elected to Lok Sabha from Chalakudy in 2014. However, he lost to Congress leader Benny Behanan while defending his seat in 2019.

Innocent served as the president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) from 2000 to 2018. The actor is survived by wife Alice and son Sonnet.
